Barley

Barley is one of the staple foods of humans and animals. Because it is more adaptable than wheat to saline soils, it could explain the increase in barley cultivation in Mesopotamia before 2000 BC. Barley malt is a key ingredient in the brewing of beer and whiskey. Barley is a major food and feed crop and the fifth most cultivated cereal in the world (530,000 km2 or 132,000,000 acres planted).

Barley is sweet, slightly cold. Selectively targeting the spleen and stomach energy channel(we call jingluo is energy channel here).

Barley can nourish and smooth energy, help digestion, milk regurgitation and remove hot toxin. Experiments at Montana State University have shown that barley is an excellent source of soluble fiber, which can lower blood cholesterol levels and lower low-density lipoprotein levels.

The main component of barley is starch, with a content between 55-65%. The protein content is about 10%. Rich in dietary fiber, it also contains vitamin E, thiamine, riboflavin, niacin, etc.

When women want to wean, they can use barley malt to make soup and take it, and this soup will also induce abortion; barley malt should not be eaten for a long time, especially for women during pregnancy and breastfeeding, otherwise it will reduce milk secretion; when weaning with barley malt, if the dosage is too small or the germination is too short, it could increase milk instead of reducing it.

Barley Tea

Barley tea, also known as Korean barley tea or roasted barley tea, is a popular hot and cold drink in Asia. In Korea, the drink is called boricha (bori meaning barley and cha meaning tea). In Japan, the drink is called mugicha and in China, the drink is called damai cha or mai cha.

To prepare barley tea:

  • Add about two tablespoons of the roasted barley to a medium pot (eight cups) of water and bring to a boil.
  • Reduce the heat to a simmer and allow to cook for 15 to 20 minutes depending on your taste. Remove from heat and allow to cool.
  • Reheat the barley tea to serve as a warm tea drink or refrigerate the barley water and serve cold.
  • Some tea drinkers add a small amount of lemon or sweetener (like honey or sugar) to the tea for added flavor. Spices such as cardamom can also be added to the hot or cold beverage.

The tea has been credited with:

  • Stomach pain relief
  • Reducing sleep disturbances and other sleep-related problems
  • Reducing constipation
  • Boosting prostate health and improving male fertility
  • Curing the common cold
  • Preventing tooth decay
  • Acting as a blood thinner
