Goiter

Goiter (also spelled goitre) is a medical condition characterized by an abnormal enlargement of the thyroid gland. The thyroid gland is a small butterfly-shaped gland located in the front of the neck, and it produces hormones that regulate the body's metabolism.

A goiter may occur due to a variety of reasons, such as an iodine deficiency, autoimmune disorders, or certain medications. In some cases, a goiter may not cause any symptoms, while in other cases, it can cause symptoms such as swelling in the neck, difficulty swallowing or breathing, coughing, and hoarseness.

In conventional medicine, treatment for goiter depends on the underlying cause and the severity of the condition. In some cases, medications may be prescribed to regulate the thyroid gland's hormone production. In other cases, surgery may be necessary to remove all or part of the thyroid gland.

In natural health, goiter is often classified as a disorder of the "Phlegm-Dampness" syndrome, which is caused by a disturbance in the balance of Yin and Yang, or the body's vital energy, Qi. Below is a brief overview of the causes, syndromes, and treatment of goiter in natural health.
